Have you ever noticed how clean or rather, unclean your office walls are? You’re probably surprised at just how much grime, dust, and scuffs they have on them. This is why you need to wash your office walls regularly.
While regularly doesn’t necessarily mean every day, washing office walls is a common task that’s often overlooked. The office walls collect fingerprints, marks, and all sorts of dirt, especially if your workplace is a busy environment.
Why You Need To Wash Your Office Walls
Most businesses don’t include washing office walls in their normal cleaning routine. However, the walls do need a good wash every now and then to prevent the office space from looking dirty.
This effort makes a big impact on the aesthetics of the office, not to mention the health of your employees.
Overall, walls get very dirty over time, whether you notice it or not. And cobwebs, dust, and mold are the biggest offenders when it comes to dirty walls
Mold can also become an issue if your walls are not cleaned properly. When you wash your office walls periodically, it reduces the overall pollutants in the workspace. Consequently, creating a cleaner atmosphere for visitors and your employees.
If any of your employees have allergies or asthma, cleaning your walls should be a task on your maintenance list.
And open windows provides an opportunity for pollen and other outdoor allergens to settle on the walls. This can trigger allergies in the office.
If your painted walls need a wash, these six steps will help you get the job done.
(1) Dust First
For best results, take care of dust and cobwebs that may have accumulated on walls, skirting boards, and corners. A long-handed sturdy duster is ideal for this job. Or even a microfiber cloth to wipe down the entire wall and make sure not to miss the corners.
(2) Know the Paint Type
The next step should be confirming what type of paint was used to cover your walls. For semi-gloss or gloss paint, a wet solution can be used to thoroughly wash the walls. But for a flat or eggshell finish, dry dust the walls so as not to ruin the paint.
(3) Choose an Ideal Day
Spring and fall are the best seasons to wash your office walls. After a winter with heating systems blowing out particles, we can clean our spaces top to bottom in Spring.
As we head into fall, many businesses perform maintenance checks to prepare their office for winter months. With additional summer traffic and open windows, office walls have likely collected dirt, marks, pollutants, and scuffs.
(4) Be Safety Conscious
When performing the wall cleaning tasks, always ensure that safety guidelines are being followed. Use a proper height and stable step ladder to reach the top of your walls. For the most part, don’t use a wobbly chair or an office chair with wheels on it. You should also not stand on office tables or desks.
(5) Use Products Best For The Job
A simple flat mop or colorless cloth and a bucket of hot, soapy water is all you need to get the job done. Work from the top down, scrubbing and wiping in gentle circles. Don’t forge to change your soapy water when it starts to look dirty.
Wipe down light switches, wall trims, and door jams with a wet cloth. For doors, the cleaning process may take a bit longer to get off all fingerprints.
(6) Rinse the Walls
Now that you have dusted the walls and cleaned of all the marks, give your walls a quick rinse. Refill your bucket with clean water and use a fresh clean cloth. Do not add soap or cleaner to the water this time.
Starting at the top again, run over your clean walls to remove any suds or leftover dirt. And you’re all done! Fresh, unblemished walls!
